Salt River Mouth Nude Beach, South Africa

Salt River Mouth, Nature's Valley, SA - Unofficial Nude Beach

Another of South Africa's unofficial nudist beaches is located at Salt River Mouth in Nature's Valley, a pristine wilderness area. The sea is usually rough and there are no life guards, so swimming is very risky. Picturesque, but rarely visited by naturists.

SALT RIVER MOUTH, NATURE'S VALLEY, NUDE BEACH SPECIAL REPORT:

  1. Having previously visited South Africa's most famous nudist beach, Sandy Bay, the next "unofficial" nudist beach we visited on our trip along the coast of South Africa was at Nature's Valley. Take the Nature's Valley turning (R102) off the N2 about 25kms after leaving Plettenberg Bay. The R102 winds through the indigenous forest of the Tsitsikama National Park to the Groot River Lagoon. Turn right at the bottom of the hill for Nature's Valley. Turn right again into an estate of upmarket holiday homes and at the end of this road is a small shop where you must get a permit. Tell the shopkeeper that you want to walk to Salt River Mouth and she will show you some photos of the walk (for about 10 seconds!), tell you that the walk starts next to the public conveniences (unsavoury when we were there) and then leave you to it. There are two routes to Salt River Mouth. A lower coastal path that cannot be traversed at high tide and a forest path over the dunes. We tried the coastal path but turned back after 20 minutes as the path appeared to have been washed away. The forest path was much more enjoyable offering fantastic views over Nature's Valley Beach and the Groot River estuary. The path is well marked with steps where necessary and takes about 45 minutes. The Salt River Mouth Beach looks idyllic from the path, but when we eventually reached it I was disappointed. The water is either brown from the rotting vegetation brought down river by the Salt River, or green from the seaweed brought in by the tide. Nevertheless we stripped off only to find that the whole beach was in habited by us and two textile couples. We found a private place slightly upstream of the main beach which was littered with seaweed but the weather was good and the area was great for birding. After a few hours we walked back over the dunes and up the Nature's Valley beach to the car. This was a good walk but I wouldn't recommend it as a nudist beach. -- Tony Smith (April 2011)
